This is a genuinely remote resort—about six hours by road from Colombo—which is exactly why it’s so good and so affordable. Break up the journey or fly in on Cinnamon Air (we can help). Food is solid but not a highlight. No other dining options in walking distance. Colored pool lights at night won’t be everyone’s taste. The resort doubles as a rescue center for stray dogs and cats—charming for most, but worth noting if animals aren’t your thing.

Food + Drink On-site surprises
Food at Karpaha Sands is casual, comforting, and well-suited to the setting. The open-air restaurant serves a mix of Sri Lankan classics, fresh seafood, and surprisingly good Italian-inspired dishes—thanks in part to the Italian general manager. Breakfasts are easy and unfussy, lunches lean beachy, and dinners are enjoyable without being destination-worthy. There aren’t many dining alternatives nearby, but that’s kind of the point: this is a place to slow down, stay put, and not overthink meals. Think solid 7/10 food in an 9/10 setting—and that’s perfectly fine here.
